Introduction

Thailand's economic recession in 1996 and its transition to the managed-float exchange rate regime in 1997 resulted in one of the worst economic crisis the country has ever experienced. The impact of this crisis permeated both the social and economic sections. To prevent the history from repeating itself, we need to be more vigilant. Staying updated on economic news, views, and tendency can reduce risks in the production, trading, and service operations of both the government and the private sectors.

Therefore, the need for economic warning system was recognized. Consequently, the UTCC Center for Economic and Business Forecasting was founded to become a hub for information, research, and forecasting related to the current issues in economic and business. It also works to create economic indicators which can accurately predict the upcoming economic condition so that both the government and private sectors can be ready for the challenges

Logistics Research

The UTCC Logistics Research Center(LRC) exists to provide consultation and research services to both the government and private organizations in order to ensure and enhance their competitiveness at the international level.

International free trade agreements (FTAs) have intensified business competition. In response, procurers, producers, carriers, suppliers, wholesalers, and retailers have networked and worked together to increase their operational effectiveness. The concept of the mentioned collaboration is known as supply chain. Each unit in the supply chain is connected by a logistics operation. As a result, the effectiveness of each link in the supply chain depends on how well the logistics system is managed. For that reason, a well-organized logistics system will reduce the company's total cost and consequently increase its profit. In addition to the highly competitive trading situation at the moment, the future FTAs will even take the competition to a more intensive level, hence the need to uphold and upgrade corporate logistics system. To demonstrate the significance of logistics management, some have claimed that the country's economic development relies on it. And that does not sound exaggerating at all.

LRC and the Industrial Environment

Industrial management involves various aspects such as planning, organizing, production, human resource, teamwork, human relation, safety in the workplace, and industrial laws. Besides conducting researches on the supply chain management, the LRC also aims to assist industrial businesses in raising their effectiveness of the industry-related aspects mentioned above. This will, consequently, increase the productivity, and simultaneously decrease the loss of time, labor, and capital.

Tools, Talents, and Teams

LRC is equipped with high profile teams and high-tech tools. Teams of faculty, researchers, scientists, engineers, and experts from both the government and private sectors collaborate to provide consultation to our valuable clients.

LRC possesses various kinds of state-of-the-art hardware and software related to logistics and industrial management. Examples of the mentioned hardware are:

Introduction

In addition to conducting researches and studies of SMEs, the UTCC "Family Business (FBEs) and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Study Center" has now expanded its roles and responsibilities to cover FBEs. The center exists to study, conduct researches, provide consultations, supply training programs, and molding and mentoring the emerging entrepreneurs of family business and SMEs.

FBEs is very unique in terms of organizational structure, the line of command, the financial and accounting management, and especially the succession policies. Particularly, the recruitment of business successor often creates conflicts among family members. Therefore, the qualified successor must be as capable and as amicable as the retired CEO. Importantly, the successor has to understand the appropriate manner to motivate the employees as well as the apt method to mobilize the enterprise.

Recognizing the significance of FBEs as a crucial foundation of Thailand's economy, the UTCC FBEs & SMEs Study Center has formed a research team called "The 106 Research Team" chaired by UTCC President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chiradet Ousawat and with Dr. Akachai Apisakkul, Dean of Graduate School, as the vice chairman. The team is composed of eight highly qualified experts with doctorates in business strategies, marketing, organizational management, human resource management, finance, accounting, operational management, and production. The team has been conducting various research projects as well as analyzing several local and international case studies in order to discover successful principles and practices for FBEs.

Mission of the FBEs & SMEs

To become the center of business knowledge for the development of the Thai society.

The Objectives of FBEs SMEs Study Center

1. To become the center for study, research, analysis, and knowledge base by providing database and indices related to FBEs & SMEs.

2. To provide academic service related to FBEs & SMEs to faculty, students, staff, and any interested individual for future development of our society and country.
